Band Crush: Swear And Shake

Band Crush: Swear And Shake

A couple of weeks back, we had the pleasure of hosting our lovely store managers for a series of meetings and workshops here at the home office. One evening we all gathered outside at the Navy Yard for dinner, cocktails, and a performance from New York-based band Swear and Shake. It was the perfect way to wind down on a late summer evening, listening to the plucking of banjo and guitar strings while Kari serenaded the crowd with her sweetly smokey voice. Read on to get to know more about these gems below!

Where are you guys originally from?

Adam: Shaun and I are from Long Island, NY; Kari is from Poughkeepsie, NY; and Benny grew up in Baltimore, MD.

How has the city of New York inspired your music?

Kari: New York can be pretty trying at times. It takes a lot of hard work. I wrote a song called “Be Your Strength” which is on our latest EP, Ain’t That Lovin’. It’s all about being there for one another as we try to navigate the big city.

What is your favorite show you’ve ever played, and where do you dream of playing one day?

Adam: My favorite show we ever played was at Stubb’s BBQ in Austin, opening for G. Love and Special Sauce. Such an amazing energy. I dream of playing at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN, one day.

Describe your music in three words:

Kari: Singable, danceable, lovable!

Do you have a certain song you’re most proud of?

Adam: “Fire.” It’s fun to play, and it’s a song that I see people react to pretty quickly. That makes it a really engaging part of the set. [watch the video for “Fire” below!]

Who are some of your personal favorite artists, music or otherwise?

Adam: Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and Billy Joel make up my trinity.

Kari, how would you describe your personal style? What do you like to wear when performing?

Kari: Sexy, functional, and versatile. It’s important for me to be comfortable and confident when I’m performing. My favorite outfits usually involve cute tights with high waisted shorts and a blouse or a romper. That way I don’t worry about bending over or jumping to high and showing the crowd my goods (wink wink).

What’s coming up for Swear and Shake?

Adam: We’re going to start writing our next record! 2015 will be full of lots of new music and more tours across the country.
