Festival Fashion At Splendour In The Grass

Splendour in the Grass was typified by my local Australian “winter.” We’re pretty blessed here in Oz, especially if you live near Byron Bay like I do. Winter is always welcome after a blistering balmy summer, but the deep chill never quite makes its way up to this part of the continent.

The sun was shining, the layers came off and I didn’t have to make use of all of the warm clothes and extra coats I had packed. While it’s still relatively warm all year round in this part of the world, the northern New South Wales winter reminds you of her presence with a refreshing cool bite. All weekend long, a light breeze made its way through paddocks and over the rolling green hills of the festival grounds lending the sartorial crowd ample opportunity to play with a mix of texture and layers.

A distinct aesthetic has been burgeoning out of Splendour in the Grass over the fourteen years the festival has been running. Partly influenced by free spirited nature of the festival itself, and perhaps also partly influenced by the bohemian style unique to the locals of the Byron Bay township. There’s something about Byron that summons those who enter the bay let down their hair (and maybe add a few flowers, too).

When a label like Spell and The Gypsy Collective hails from the area its no wonder you can’t help but find yourself submerged in a beautiful sea of fringing, turquoise, white lace, crochet, suede, face paint, and feathers. We set out in the field this year to find shining style stars of Splendour 2014 and can officially report back that eclecticism is in. The name of the game is more, more, more!

To get the Splendour look, start with an earthy and natural colour palette base in a mix of texures and finishes. Think lace bell bottoms clashed with a suede fringe jacket. Pile on silver coin jewellery, always say yes to quirky statement accessories, have a morning out in the sun with your best friends playing with metallic body paint….
