FP Me Stylist of the Week: EmAllen
FP Me Stylist of the Week: EmAllen
Crisp and always perfectly styled, Emily Allen’s photos never cease to strike me. From style, to hair, to location… everything is there and always on point. You may not expect that this girl spent most of her youth overseas. First Norway, then Egypt, the diverse cultures she experienced growing up helped to shape the person she would become, and opened her eyes to see the world in a different light. After dipping her toes in a slew of jobs across all fields, she found her true passion in hair styling. Her talent shines through in some of her pictures, where you can see her locks crafted into braided crowns strewn with flowers. Emily loves working with people and making them happy, and she’s found the best of both worlds through the art of hair styling and makeup. Whether she’s working on an editorial shoot or styling a friend, she puts her skill set to use and loves to see the magic she creates. Get to know more about Emily and what inspires her below!

Where are you from? How did this shape the person that you are today?
I was born in Houston, Texas. However, I was raised overseas, traveling for my dad’s job. I lived in Stavanger, Norway until I was 6 and then moved to Cairo, Egypt until I was 14. My vastly differing homes filled my childhood with lots of culture! Cultures which have influenced my personality today. One of my fondest memories, one that I can distinctly remember, was going to the Khan with my mother, (a local spot in Cairo with lots of shops). I loved smelling the spice shops, admiring the detailed Persian rugs, and collecting turquoise stones. This exposure caused me to create an open interest in fashion, food, and humanity as I developed my personality.

Where and when do you feel most inspired?
Pre-photo shoot is my favorite time to let the creative juices flow. That’s the time when my web of ideas come together and I get to create that image I’ve been brainstorming. Also, sundays are my jam. Being my one day off, I usually stay home and let my mind wander in every direction, absorbing all the things that I can’t fit into my head during the week.

How would you describe your personal style?
Comfort is key when it comes to my closet. I’d say my style is a cross between a Lou (laidback and carefree) and a Sandy (summer inspired and effortless). Living in Utah, where winter lasts about 8 months of the year, usually requires some layering. Lately my go-to consists of black jeans, a basic tee paired with a flannel tied around my waist. Topped off with my Clipperton fedora, of course!

How do you spend most of your days?
I’ve always been a busy body, so most of my days are spent in exactly that fashion! Between doing hair and working at a local boutique, I stay pretty occupied with my interests. I’m also currently working on putting together a portfolio for my freelance work. When I’m not working, I love decorating my apartment, thrifting, fixing up old things, and listening to Louis Armstrong.

What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
Aside from being a stylist, I’ve had just about every job in the book. I’ve always been the type of person to do a million different jobs for a million different people! I’ve been a furniture store receptionist, cupcake barista, taco truck worker, retail associate, nanny, sushi waitress, frozen yogurt girl, and even dabbled in teaching adult swim lessons. I love being around people and learning new things. In the last year I have been able to really find my passions and combine them all into my every day work.

Why did you decide to become a hairstylist? What do you love most about your job?
After working in retail for several years, I developed a passion for personal styling. I loved inspiring people, and helping them feel great about themselves. Eventually I decided to further my education, and dove into the world of hair and makeup! I love doing editorial work, and feeling those behind-the-scenes vibes that come with photo shoots. Hairstyling is a skill set, one that needs constant fine-tuning. It’s an art.

If you could have an FP Me shoot anywhere in the world where would it be?
Anywhere in Scandinavia. Even though I moved from Stavanger when I was just a little girl, I remember driving thru the countryside with my family and admiring the rolling green land and crisp blue skies. I think it would be the dreamiest setting for an ethereal-themed shoot.

What has been your proudest moment?
I married my husband just a month ago, and that was one of the greatest moments I have ever experienced! He’s been my number one supporter these last few years. Austin pushes me to pursue my dreams (even when they sound a little crazy). I couldn’t imagine tackling this life without him.

What does being “free” mean to you?
To be free means getting to know yourself and the world around you, and having the courage to test life’s boundaries. It means to do what you think is right, not what everyone says is right. We’ve all got our quirks, and should never have to hide behind what’s considered “normal.” Just be confident! Even if you don’t feel it, walk it. Breathe life into what you are wearing.
