Lively Lidded Vessel, ivory glaze, dark rust

& quot; & quot;
Course & quot; 10-3/ 4 & quot; high
x 5 & quot; wide stoneware, oxides, high fire lusters

Tossed on the pottery wheel and modified through faceting, pulling and twisting, this piece reminds me of a newly carved course in snow or white sand. The glaze is a butter soft ivory, tan on sharper edges. The mouth of the vessel I’ve painted with a red iron oxide, which fires to a metallic dark brown. The ball on top is made from white porcelain, with a clear crackled glaze.

This is part of my Dynamic Lidded Vessel series. The series embodies movement, balance and caricature. Feeling my way through the shapes I explore the overstated, circus-like nature of toys, odd characters, flora, animals and anything that exhibits both poise and precariousness.

When I begin work on a piece I have a loose idea in mind, however am likewise at the grace of the clay, temperature and humidity. Work begins on the wheel and the base and the top are then modified through pulling, carving, curving, trimming. The covers are inverted and I pull longest possible spires from the available clay until it will pull no more. That becomes my & quot; & quot; canvas & quot; for the active shapes I aim to create. Each piece moves through interim phases before it can hold the last gesture. I have small windows of opportunity where the clay is flexible enough and at the same time company enough. It comes together best when rhythm, balance and timing work together.
