“Brought this to work for a potluck luncheon.”Oohs” and “ahhs” and moans of approval could be heard around the room.If you closed your eyes and just listened to the sounds, you’d think something nasty was going on!!This should be nominated in the dessert “Hall of Fame” category…it’s that good!”
“Decadent. If you love rich cream cheese desserts, this one is for you.It has been a favorite around this family for years. Thanks for reminding me of this dish.I’ll have to make it again.”
“I just made this last night and wanted to add that it is best if cooled completely. If it is too warm the 2 layers seem to run together and you don’t get the same effect. It remonds me of a lemon bar, with the crust and the curd filling.”
“I made this for the 4th of July.I thought it was delicious and will make it again.A great recipe!!!”
“Reading the other reviews, I decided to cut down on the powdered sugar to 2 cups and it was PLENTY.Next time I will use even less. This was great, nonetheless. It reminded us of cheesecake and in the future, I will top it with strawberry or cherry pie filling.Thanks.”
“I can’t give any stars because I had every intention of using this recipe except FORGOT CREAM CHEESE at the store!Nooo!I used the cake mix, butter, and egg for the crust, then Recipe #174435’s recipe for the “gooey” part.IF YOU FORGET YOUR CREAM CHEESE, there is still hope for you to enjoy a delicious, rich, and melt-in-your-mouth gooey butter cake!!!”
“I had to bake it a bit longer-about 45 minutes. But it was very good!”
“Erin, this recipe is really delicious!I really didn’t know what to expect, but was very happily surprised with its out come. I made exactly as directed and made no changes. This recipe needs no icing – to be sure!Rich, gooey and very buttery! Thanks for sharing, Erin!”
“This is five star all the way. This cake is so rich and gooey, its almost sinful!I don’t like to bake and am not very good at it – this one is easy and taste ultra gourmet.I’ve given this recipe to six people so far!I followed the recipe exactly – no changes at all.”
“This was awesome. I listened to other posters about the sweetness and I used 2 cups of powdered sugar. I also used the yellow cake mix with the pudding in it because it was what I had on hand, I don’t know if it made a difference from the original recipe but the pieces I did share (the very few) the general consensus was that it was delicious! I’ll be making again!”
“Soooo good! This cake is very rich, so a small piece will do.”
“Yummy!I am from St. Louis and this is a signature dish.I always reduce the powered sugar.”
“This is not the same as you get in St. Louis. The original one is made with a yeast crust and the center is butter and sugar. This is OK in a pinch but if you want the real thing this is not it. sorry”
“This is a delicious cake! My DH especially loved it. I wouldn’t change anything about it! Thanks for sharing.”
“Although this is not the original Gooey butter cake recipe it is good and quick. For those who don’t like very sweet confections this is NOT for you. It is SUPPOSED to be very sweet to balance out the bitterness of the coffee that it is usually served with it. I am from St. Louis and have made this version several times. Very good.”
“Made it with chocolate cake mix as it was recommended by other reviewers and because it was on hand. I used real butter, Recipe #13373 for the cream cheese and half the amount of sugar required. It all worked out very nicely. Even though it was too sweet for me, my hubby, my kids and some friends loved it, so I know it deserves the 5 stars! Thank you Miss Erin. Made for I Recommend Tag Game.”
“After all the rave reviews, I decided to give this a try. This was ok. Definitely NOT a “wow” IMO.After one piece I felt I could go the rest of my life without it. Cant quite put my finger on it other than to say, If I want to feel my arteries clog, then the taste better be worth it.This was not.”
“WOW! This didn’t last long around our house!Makes great bars too if you cook a little longer.”
