Sirloin Steak Casserole
About This Recipe
“This is similar enough to swiss steak to be comforting, but different enough not to be boring. I often substitute freshly minced garlic for the garlic powder. Serve with mashed potatoes and a green vegetable; I prefer green beans with this.”

“Bergy came up with the great idea of making one of Lennies recipes to celebrate her recent birthday, this is what I made and am so glad I did.The red wine, with the other flavours make this casserole delicious. I used rib eye steak, and fresh garlic. It was only in the oven for 1 1/4 hours, served with mashed sweet and ordinary potato, green beans and baby carrots. Delicious winter meal!”
“Made it exactly as written…..Outstanding! Will definitely add this to my rotation of favorites. Thanks!”
“Delicious. I made the recipe as directed except for adding fresh oregano at the end. It was even better reheated the next day.”
“So so so good! I served it with chunky garlic mashed potatoes andit was perfect. Only thing I would do differently is cook the meat longer, like four hours, so it is very tender. I would definitely recommend!”
“This was a great recipe! I served it with mashed potatoes & peas. I added 2 tsp each of onion & garlic powder to the flour mixture, as my family likes their dishes well seasoned. Also, I added 1 cup beef broth, a small can of tomato sauce, & fresh garlic to the sauce. It turned out very tender & I had lots of “gravy”. My family loved it & I will definitely make this recipe again!”
“very tasty and simple recipe. recommended!!! I added some beef stock as it started to get a little dry (probably because I was cooking it in a crock pot). wonderfully flavorsome, Thank you!!!”
“I followed this recipe exactly. It was delicious. The flavors will really be good after it’s re-heated the next day.”
“Real comfort food. I doubled the recipe and only had one can of tomatoes so subbed with a can of tomato sauce. the ‘gravy’ was still delicious. My mushrooms would have been better a few days ago so discarded instead of using sadly. The steak was fall apart tender and very flavourful. I wish that I had been paying closer attention and not allowed so much of the sauce to cook away because what was there was very good. Thanks for sharing this very good recipe.”
“This was a really nice meal on a snowy, coldday. I had intended to cut the recipe in half as I only had about 1 1/4 lbs of steakbut somehow I forgot about reducing the tomatoes. So I had a lot of gravy but it didn’t matter, this was still very good.I caramelized the onions and omitted the mushrooms. Since I had left over pasta from lastnight, I served this with a choice of either mashed potatoes or pasta as a side. I really liked it served on top of the potatoes, the kids liked it beside their buttered mash potatoes but my husband preferred it served over the noodles. To each his own…whatever makes you happy! Thx Lennie!”
“Wow!This was delicious! The whole family loved it!I made it exactly as directed except that I caramelized the onions before adding to the casserole (dh only likes onions if they are caramelized). It turned out great. This will be a frequent recipe.I served over garlic mashed potatoes.I can see serving this over egg noodles also.Thank you for a lovely meal!”
“This was pretty simple, although a bit time consuming, and it was delicious. My kids didn’t care for the strong flavor or the pepper (it could have used a little less), but I thoroughly enjoyed the tenderness of the steak and the sauce.I used petite diced tomatoes and omitted the mushrooms (preference).I served it over 1/2 and 1/2 white and sweet mashed potatoes.I’ll tweak it to my family’s tastes a little more, but I’ll definitely make it again.”
“My grocery had a buy one get two free on “petite” sirloins. Tuns out they were not the greatest. Since they weren’t going to go on the grill I came looking for something to do with them and this just jumped right out at me. This was very tasty and made alot! I served it over egg noodles to three hungry guys and myself. There were still leftovers for two the next day. Thanks for a nice change of pace recipe.”
“This was extremely nice on a cold winters night.I served with Recipe #123403 and steamed veggies. This fed the four of us with quite a bit left over so on the second night I layered the leftover casserole into a square dish, topped with the cut up leftover veggies and then topped with some extra cubed potatoes which I’d steamed.Sprinkled the potatoes with some garlic salt, cayenne pepper and caraway seeds. This made for another excellent meal using up all the leftovers.”
“The ratings for the 4 of us were: 3,4,5,4 so I am giving it a 4.Meat was fork tender to say the least.I will add more salt and garlic next time.Served over brown rice which was very good with the sauce.”
“This recipe was so easy & incredibly satisfying.I left out the mushrooms (family pref) but prepared as stated otherwise.I had fully intended to put it atop a cloud of mashed potatoes & photograph it but ended up not feeling well before dinner was finished. So DH & DS ate it without a side dish last night & I’m enjoying it for breakfast this morning.I’ll be making it again & again and promise to do it right with a photo next time. Thanks for posting, Lennie!”
“This was wonderful on a cold fall evening.Everything came together so well, and the beef was very tender.I served this with parmesan smashed potatoes and steamed green beans for a complete comfort food meal.We will make it again this winter.”
“What a delightfully simple and tasty meal this made, thank you, Lennie!Almost a 1st, I followed directions…almost to a “T”.The only modification I made was due to shopping challenges – no 19oz tomatoes around here, so I subbed one 14.5oz dicedand roasted garlic tomatoes, not drained;and one 10oz can “RoTel” Chunky mild, drained. The aroma was awesome, tenderized perfectly, and served with garlic mashed potatoes and green beans. My husband looked at me as if I were a new person…maybe the “Goddess of Food”!Again, thank you.”
“I made this recipe just as it appears. It was really delicious — moist and tender. (I often have trouble with getting such good results with braised beef.)It served generously two of us with another meal left over. That one I’ll serve with whole wheat noodles. Can hardly wait. This is definitely a keeper.”
