Styling 101: The Turtleneck

Styling 101: The Turtleneck

I have always been a fan of turtlenecks.

They seem to be one of those pieces that divides people – you either love them or you don’t. I personally don’t think there’s anything more cozy than a soft sweater or pullover that has a high neckline. Luckily, turtlenecks are making quite the stylish statement this season, and I’m excited to incorporate more of them into my wardrobe. I love how we’ve taken a spin on the classic shape, and added in drapes and soft materials to make the turtleneck look new and modern. If you’re looking to make room in your closet for this classic fall piece, check out three ways we love to wear the turtleneck!

The Candy Way

Candy is sweet. She’s that girl next door who loves lace, soft colors, and isn’t afraid to show her flirty side. Pairing a soft open knit pullover, like the Ladder Stitch Pullover, with a mini skirt and thigh highs allows for all the right proportions. The relaxed turtleneck style up top is played down even more with the drapey silhouette, giving a flowy twist to the normal fitted style we are so used to seeing. Wearing something over-sized up top gives you a good excuse to show a little more on the bottom. Throw on some thigh highs and clogs to keep the look sweet, yet sexy.

The Boy Way

My style definitely changes depending on my mood, but you can always expect to see a little bit of grungy tomboy in most of my looks. That being said, this is probably my favorite way to wear the turtleneck. The sleeves have been removed on the typical long sleeved turtleneck, and what we’re left with is the ever so cool LA Livin 90210 Muscle Tank. Throw on some boyfriend jeans and your favorite boots to keep the look truly Lou, and add in a touch of grunge by layering a flannel over the tank.

The Meadow Way

Meadow is our bohemian girl who loves to layer. Think maxi skirts, long flowy dresses, and fun prints. Fall is the perfect time to start layering cozy pullovers over slips and dresses and to incorporate over-sized third pieces. If you’re not down for the full on turtleneck look, a cowl neck is a good alternative. I love the way the We The Free Beatnik Hacci looks layered over top of the Secret Garden Printed Maxi. Accessorize with a good pair of leather boots and a slouchy jacket to complete the look!
