Have you ever heard of Good Medicine Beauty Lab? I hadn’t either, until a package postmarked by them landed in my hands a couple weeks ago. Inside? Pure magic. Five women, inspired by the Southwestern desert and all that inhabits it, created a line of pure & natural beauty products that have now become a staple in my everyday beauty routine. Some are used to cleanse, some to nourish, and others just to enjoy. Skin is the human canvas, protecting the most important parts that make us, us. It deserves to be respected and loved, and that’s what Good Medicine aims to do, and they’ve totally got me sold. See what they’re all about below!
Hi! Can you tell us a little about yourself and what you do at Good Medicine Beauty Lab?
Our beloved beauty lab is a desert treasure. Five amazing women have come together to create something truly special, each contributing their own touch. We compliment each other so well — the result being our wild desert creations. Our inspiration for Good Medicine is the Southwest desert. The desert is such a powerful and beautiful place. The plants that grow and thrive here, nurtured by sunlight and fresh air remind us that we, as women, are free to thrive anywhere and everywhere. That’s the beauty and the magic in our line of natural, desert-born products. They are derived from powerful native botanicals and we are lucky enough to have the privilege to bottle up the desert and deliver it to women all over the world. We love combining these amazing plants and essences to create wonderfully nourishing products for your skin!
How did Good Medicine come to be?
Good Medicine is actually a third-generation family company. It all started with the spa movement of the 60s. The first generation searched the world over to find the best way to extract pure botanicals and bottle them in a way that allowed the user to benefit from their power. This was obviously at a time when “green beauty” was yet to become a thing, and virtually all skincare was petroleum, chemical-based, soulless products.
Nowadays, the green beauty movement is alive and well and we are thrilled to be a part of it. We have learned much over the generations and have been able to pass down incredible knowledge and expertise. Our lab perfectly extracts those same botanicals that the original founders studied and worked with. We take pride in the notion that their vision of creating healthy, natural skincare for women has become a thriving reality. We think that’s pretty great.
What’s the motto at Good Medicine?
“World peace, one cream at a time.” We joke about this, but somehow it actually resonates. When we feel beautiful, our tolerance, confidence and basic joy becomes infectious. That’s powerful.
Can you tell us a little bit about the products that you guys make? What are they so special?
We consider everything that is important to us and to our customers. From carbon footprint, sustainability, organics, aesthetics, the anatomy of the skin…everything. We also believe the environment in which our products are created is equally important. That’s why we have created a special place with incredible people. Everyone who works here is in love with their job. Even now, after over 40 years and thousands of batches, we still get excited when we see that incredible sheen that appears towards the end of the blending process that signals a job well done.
How do the products work?
While every formula is incredibly effective on its own, the magic of our products is that they can be combined to create all new products. We have a whole section of our website dedicated to “mixology.” For instance, you could take our Ashes and mix with our Honey Bee product to create the perfect acne and sunburn treatment. Combine our Rain and Honey Dew products and you have a wonderful, light moisturizer that’s perfect for coastal living. And those are just a couple of examples.
How do you come up with the recipes? Do you source ingredients from all over the world?
As women of all different ages and skin types, we all have our individual needs, wants and desires. When we begin to formulate, we always start with the condition or need and work our way backwards in formulating the solution. We choose carefully and choose locally whenever possible. We wildcraft every desert botanical, which is the base of our formulas, and gravitate towards like-minded suppliers. It’s incredibly important to us that every company who supplies an ingredient shares our ethics and high standard of quality.
We have been sourcing essential oils for over 40 years and have learned that oils are products of the communities they are found within. We are very conscious to buy only those oils which are not only the highest quality, but are sustainable and support the larger community. We have researched small families in many countries who have been making a single oil and passing their knowledge down to the next generations. We have had the luxury of time to really find the purest and best essential oils the world has to offer.
What is your favorite product?
Definitely our Rain Replenishing Oil Wash. No contest. When we created this product we discovered another level of health and vibrance. It works on virtually everyone to enhance and beautify the complexion. It’s our most dynamic product. It’s also a customer favorite.
I am obsessed with Starry Eyes. I can’t get enough of it. How would you recommend using this product?
We get this a lot! We think it must be that warm, tingling sensation you get from it that people love so much. That sensation is from the wasabi — which is incredible for brightening the eye area by increasing circulation and transferring oxygen. To use it, put a small dab in the palm of your hand, use your fingertips to lightly press it into the delicate skin around your eyes. Don’t rub, just softly dab and tap it into the skin. It’s also incredible to plump and lift fine lines around the nose and mouth area. We love to use it between our eyes and up over the brow.
If you could pick one item from your line to use for the rest of your life, what would it be?
That would have to be our Radiance Enlivening body Cream. Is there anything worse than dry skin? You can use it head-to-toe, especially on your face for super soft skin and protection from the elements.
What do you think is key to feeling beautiful in your own skin?
Be true to yourself. Create a beauty that emanates from within. When we feel this beauty, we are kinder, more tolerant and lighter. We are able to meet life’s challenges in a graceful way.
