Vintage 30s Black Satin Mourning Coat – 1930s Deco Coat with Capelet – Black Stroller Coat – Opera Coat – Size Small to Medium by OmAgainVintage

Amazing piece of vintage from the 1930s in fantastic condition. A gorgeous black satin tafetta stroller coat from Philipsborn with a National Recovery Act tag with the & quot; Blue Eagle & quot ;. The NRA tags were only used from 1933 through 1935 (see short history below). The coat features a shirred on cape that creates the sleeves and then cascades down the back of the garment. It has a flat collar that has an attached loop of matching fabric on the nape …. not exactly certain what the reason is for it. It closes with one large black button and loop; fully lined in black.

Philipsborn was a famous mail order catalogue and there are several vintage advertisements that can be googled. I was going to include one in the photos, but did not have enough room.

When I first saw this piece, I thought it was Edwardian and then I discovered the National Recovery Act tag and was able to properly date it.

Many thanks to the Vintage Fashion Guild and the author for the following brief history:

The NRA Blue Eagle label dates from 1933-1935 only. It was a voluntary program covering many consumer goods and was initiated by FDR. It was declared unconstitutional in 1935. This is the famous ‘Blue Eagle’ Label, seen only 1933-35 in USA. This label can be very handy for dating 1930s garments, accessories and even patterns.
