Whipped Coconut Oil For Hair And Skin
Whipped Coconut Oil For Hair And Skin
We talk a lot about oils here on the Free People blog, and for good reason – they’re amazing for both your external and internal health. Personally, I’m a fan of coconut oil: I cook with it, slather it on my skin, rub it into the ends of my hair, and even add it to my coffee and tea.
This incredible oil has been in the news a lot lately, and for good reason: Among its myriad of uses and benefits, coconut oil has positive antioxidant properties, meaning that it can actually stop free radicals from damaging tissue and other healthy fats in our bodies. Plus, when you use coconut oil as a lotion, every day is like going to the beach, it smells amazing.
However, I have one complaint: The one thing that I don’t like about this miracle oil is how hard and crumbly it is straight out of the jar during colder months. With the cooler days of fall not far off, I went in search of a solution and found out that coconut oil can be whipped into a creamy consistency that actually stays relatively soft. To make this moisturizer even better, I’ve added soothing jojoba oil and one of my favorite essential oils for scent. The result is intoxicating, and a welcome relief to sun-soaked skin after a day at the beach now, or to parched dry skin after a cold day outdoors later.
You’ll Need:
1 cup organic unrefined virgin coconut oil (room temperature – unmelted)
A few drops of the essential oil of your choice
1 tsp jojoba oil
Combine all ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Mix on high for seven or eight minutes. While you can use a hand-held mixer for this, I recommend using a stand mixer so you can leave it running while the concoction emulsifies. After the eight minutes is up, use a rubber spatula to transfer the moisturizer to a glass jar. Store in a cool, dark place indefinitely.
To use: Apply to freshly washed, slightly damp skin, as you would a moisturizer or rub a little into the ends of damp hair as a leave-in conditioner.
To decorate the jar: Trace the lid of the jar onto a piece of heavyweight brown paper and cut out the circle. Use glue to adhere the paper disk to the top of the jar, and wrap rough twine around the outside of the lid, fastening with glue. Allow to dry.
