Again, lucky me. My former students from Ukraine live all over the world. Now they found for me 100% WILD ORGANIC LINEN / FLAX fiber directly from BELARUS (BELARUSSIA) one of the former republic of the USSR, Soviet Union, one of the leading manufactures of linen yarn in the world.

Flax is probably the most well known bast fiber among hand spinners. Do you know the terms & quot; tow-headed & quot; and & quot; flaxen-haired & quot ;? These terms take on a whole new meaning once you have worked with this fiber. Flax can vary from fine almost silky grades to the coarsest tow, from creamy light to tan in color. Flax roving is made from fibers that have been cut into shorter lengths before carding. Tow is what is combed out of the long finer fibers, and was often used for starting fires and for candle wicks. Flax is stronger when wet. It irons and dyes well.
Here you have flax, super fine water retted top in natural color. This flax is split and combed. It is a finer flax than the dew retted flax. 12 – 18 inch staple length.

Linen yarn is spun from the long fibers found just behind the bark in the multi-layer stem of the flax plant. In order to retrieve the fibers from the plant, the woody stem and the inner pith (called pectin), which holds the fibers together in a clump, must be rotted away. The cellulose fiber from the stem is spinnable and is used in the production of linen thread, cordage, and twine. From linen thread or yarn, fine toweling and dress fabrics may be woven. Linen fabric is a popular choice for warm-weather clothing. It feels cool in the summer but appears crisp and fresh even in hot weather. Household linens truly made of linen become more supple and soft to the touch with use; thus, linen was once the bed sheet of choice.
Flax has been cultivated for its remarkable fiber, linen, for at least five millennia. The spinning and weaving of linen is depicted on wall paintings of ancient Egypt. As early as 3,000 B.C. , The fiber was processed into fine white fabric (540 threads to the inch-finer than anything woven today) and wrapped around the mummies of the ancient Egyptian pharaohs. Mentioned several times in the Bible, it has been used as a cool, comfortable fiber in the Middle East for centuries as well. Ancient Greeks and Romans greatly valued it as a commodity. Finnish traders are believed to have introduced flax to Northern Europe where it has been under cultivation for centuries.

In 1854 CE, when the Catholic Church reaffirmed the dogma of immaculate conception, Pope Piux IX even declared the Virgin Mary the patron saint of linen maids, in perhaps the first official fashion statement of the Vatican.

The very finest flax fibers may be anywhere from 12-20 “(30.5-51 cm) in length.
Some of the benefits of linen are that it is allergy-free, absorbs humidity and allows the skin to breathe, antistatic, antibacterial and low elasticity (fabrics do not deform). Linen can be washed many times without alteration. It is able to absorb up to 20 times its weight in moisture before it feels damp.

I put the picture of Ukrainian girl, she is in traditional Ukrainian costume, spinning the flax. Exactly like my Grandmother back in the Ukraine did. I remember this, like it was yesterday. She grew flax & then processed all by hands & then spun. A lot of her bed sheet were made of linen. My Aunt, back in the Ukraine still has all sheets and other stuff, my Grandmother made for her dowry. I visited her this summer & brought some, my Aunt gave me some of the sheets. And the sheets have crocheted borders. I am so excited now I have all that priceless items. I will put all in my museum & then put some pictures here for you to see it too.

Ukraine, Russia & Belorussia (means white Russia, because birch tree everywhere, the trunk of the birch tree is white) – are 3 slavonic sisters.

And another picture – is simply field of flax- breath taking sight. And immediately the very old Ukrainian song is on my mind “Flax is blooming, blue, blue, and Mother is waiting for her son to come back home …” Very soft, soul touching song.
