Check it Out: Break Bread

Take a walk on the sweet side with Think Tank Galleries’ current show, Break Bread.

I’m eating chocolate as I write this. I promise you… I had to! Try leaving Break Bread, the current show on exhibit at Think Tank Gallery in downtown Los Angeles, without immediately reaching for the nearest thing to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Break Bread is a month-long cultural haven dedicated to art, music, food and more, set in an eccentric and playful “candyland” created by Banksy collaborator Scott Hove and artist Baker’s Son. Six different “rooms” offer colorful and animated sculpted art, paintings and installations. The maze of floor-to-ceiling cake sculptures are intricately detailed and wildly life-like. Chandeliers made of candy and gumdrops hang from the ceiling while saturated pink lights cast onto its walls. In another room, stuffed animals hang from a chainlink fence. But don’t think that it’s all whimsical and fun — Break Bread has a twisted side, too. In a recent article with the LA Times, Hove says, “as we’re striving for celebration in our lives, there are a lot of obstacles that are not pleasant. We tried to bring the two together, the dark and the light.” However, Hove also adds, “I want people to walk in and have a really enjoyable, peak beauty experience.” So have a look and explore Break Bread, open now until March 15. Free admission.
