  • “This cake is wonderful. It is so rich though I can’t imagine it with icing. We always topped it with a whipped topping (cool whip). That seemed to calm down the richness.I’m so glad I found this recipe. I lost my recipe box and thought this one was lost forever.I am looking for another recipe I lost called Chocolate Chip Cake. It is a man’s cake as it is a very moist cake that also does not require icing. It is made with dates, soda, no sour cream, pecans, cocoa, and of course flour and vanilla; can’t remember the rest or amounts. I got this recipe from my aunt a long time ago, but she doesn’t remember it. I have also put it in several school recipe books in Springfield, Mo. when my 23 yr old son was in grade school. If anyone can help me find this recipe I will be forever grateful. Thanks, Marilyng”

  • “I have been making a cake that is almost identical to this – I think the only difference is milk & vinegar instead of buttermilk. And I agree with the reviewers that it’s a great recipe.I am posting this just to add one suggestion that has worked for me.I like to add the cocoa powder to the dry ingredients. It seems to clump when I put it with the butter & water, but mixes in nicely with the sugar & flour.”

  • “Wow… this got raves. This chocolate cake is a keeper for sure. I wasn’t sure about it’s outcome because I don’t think I’ve ever had to boil ingredients for a cake before. It needed a little more time in my oven… but turned out great. Next time I’ll cut down on that icing as it really makes the cake sweet. This cake is very rich and delicious by itself. Thanks for the recipe.”

  • “I tried it and this is fantastic!I didn’t have buttermilk so I used milk & vinegar (1 tblspn to 1 cup of milk let sit 5 mins and then use) I also added the cocoa to the dry ingredients.Other than those changes I followed the recipe exactly.I actually made it 3 days ago and we’re still eating it and its still moist and delicious. Thanks for sharing!!”

  • “I have been meaning to make this for a while and it sat in my recipe binder. We wanted dessert but I didn’t have much in the cupboards.Since this is from scratch, I did have all the pantry items needed.IT WAS AMAZING!Hubs loved it, and I had to put it up on the fridge because the kids wanted to eat it for breakfast the next day.Really delicious, and can’t wait to make for company.”

  • “Good Cake.. i poked holes in top of the cake because the icing looked to thin so i thought it would be good if it soaked into the cake, made it more ‘fudgy’! Thanks for the recipe, i will make it again for sure!”

  • “I made this cake and everyone loved it!!!Thanks for sharing.”

  • “This has been my go-to chocolate cake recipe since first using it months ago.It is quite fudgy to the point that some friends have referred to it as brownie cake, but everyone loves it nonetheless. Icing it while warm is key to the recipe.Quick note to agree with another reviewer that I feel the cocoa clumps less when mixed with the dry ingredients.Thank you for a great recipe!”

  • “Okay…. this cake is phenomenal!!!!Rave reviews from everyone. Made for DH bday and it was enjoyed by him and everyone else. Someone even said this was the best chocolate cake he”s ever had!!! I WILL be making this again. Definately worth the effort that goes into it!”

  • “A delicious easy chocolate cake.It was moist and very good chocolate flavor.I followed the recipe exactly and it turned out perfectly. Thanks!”

  • “The reason I’m rating 3 stars is that it didnt rise like other cakes I’ve made,Over all, this is a very good cake & icing.”

  • “So Good! Just like my mom’s, which is exactly what I was looking for. I love the icing…especially the next day after making it.”

  • “Very good. The only problem that I has was on my part, I added too much liquid. But that was all my fault. Other than that, this cake was pretty good. Thanks!”

  • “Nice but not fantastic. More like a chocolate butter cake as opposed to a dark chocolate fudge cake which is what I am looking for. This recipe is identical to another top rated chocolate cake recipe (#119449) with the only difference being the amount of salt used. We still enjoyed this though so thanks for posting.”

  • “I was very skeptical of this recipe as it only called for 4 TB of cocoa, so I added an extra 2.I was tempted to add more, but to my surprise it came out moist and chocolatey with the extra 2 tablespoons.I added pecans to the frosting.”

  • “I usually resort to using cake mixes, but after this one that was so delicious and so easy to make, I’ll be doing it from scratch next time I have to make a cake. I halved the recipe and made a 8 x 8 cake. Yum!”

  • “Great recipe!!! Loved the flavor.I had a little trouble with the frosting ingredients separating at first, but I kept stirring then quickly poured it over the confectioner’s sugar and hurried to keep mixing it all together. This will be added to my chocoholics list. Thanks Taryn.”

  • “I did not enjoy”

  • “This is a really great cake!My mom made it for a recent birthday and it was so tasty. It isn’t going to win any rewards for looks, but it is definitely a good choice for any chocolate-lover!”
