FP Me Stylist Of The Week: Sam Hobson
Get inspired by our stylist of the week!
“People are the canvas on which to express themselves…”
I have to agree with Sam’s statement above. If you take a look at her FP Me profile, clothing is her art form, and her love of styling shines through every day. She’s faced with fashion 24/7, and this part-time assistant visual manager/full-time stylist wouldn’t have it any other way. Get to know Sam as we discover more about her beautiful life in Utah!
Tell us about yourself: Where are you from/where are you now, what do you do, and how did you get to where you are?
I’m a Salt Lake City native — I love my hometown like crazy! I live in the heart of SLC and I’m completely in love with the artistic culture this city has to offer, and it’s just a 10-minute drive to the mountains! I am a fashion student in pursuit of my love for designing, styling and merchandising. I actually started college via the medical route, but I couldn’t deny my obsession with the fashion industry. I switched my focus to what I’m truly passionate about…BEST DECISION EVER!
What’s a typical day in the life look like for you?
CRAZY! I work full-time fulfilling my dream job (Free People Salt Lake City) while still in school. I head out for work at 6am and I’m usually working, “schooling” or, on the good days, styling shoots until the dark hours. My life is jam packed but I wouldn’t have it any other way! I do what I love every day and I am beyond grateful for that!
When did you start working at Free People, and what do you like most about your job?
I joined the Free People Salt Lake City team last October as the Visual MIT. I love all things visual and, while in this position, merchandising became my new muse. I was then promoted to AVM 6 months later and I still love riding this new wave! I love that my job lets me tap into my creative side while connecting it with business and stats. Merchandising is a forever, ongoing learning process but I love the challenge and I’m hungry to learn more!
What made you want to pursue styling?
Fashion absolutely fascinates me. Clothing is an art form, one that you get to wear and create every day. Not only that, people are the canvas on which to express themselves, whether it’s how they are feeling today, this week, this year, whatever. GAH! Styling is just a release for me. I create a vision in my mind and there is nothing more satisfying than seeing it come to life.
How would you describe your own personal style?
My style is very Lou with a rocker edge. I’m a sucker for a good band tee, destroyed denim and killer ankle booties.
If you had to wear one outfit for the rest of your life, what would it be?
All black everything! A slouchy black tee, distressed leather jacket with some waxed jeans and booties…black is the new black, right?
You just woke up…what’s your daily beauty regime?
I’m probably running late, let’s be real, so first thing’s first — brush the pearls! Next I use my Frank’s Coffee Scrub to cleanse and exfoliate my face, just a quick dab of mascara, nude lipstick and I’m out the door!
What music have you been listening to recently?
I am a music FREAK. I love finding new, “vibey” Indie artists such as; Youth Lagoon (definitely a staple in my iTunes), Saskatchewan (check out their track, Youth Ministry) and Destroyer. But I am SO loyal to the incredible INCUBUS. They were big in the late 90’s but have continued to kill it on the jams. I encourage everyone to feast in their melodies.
Any new apps you’ve been obsessing over lately?
I’m not much of an “app junkie”, but I’d say I stick to the classic Instagram, Tumblr and Pinterest.
What are three things you can’t live without?
1. My huge, crazy family! I am one of 6 children and it’s safe to say my siblings are my favorite people on this planet!
2. Running. Running is my form of meditation and my favorite way to exercise. I love that I can literally get lost in my thoughts on a run. I seem to solve all of life’s problems with just a nice jog.
3. My religion is a huge part of what makes me, me. So, yes, I’m from Utah and yes I’m Mormon!
What does being “Free” mean to you?
Being “Free” is to be unequivocally yourself. This is by far the most terrifying thing for so many but, when you can let go of the outsiders’ opinions, you gain a sense of who you are and you learn to love that person. How sad to live a life of bottled up self-expression because you’re worried about what “they” will think?
