Mermaid Scrubbers: The Natural Beauty Secret You’ve Probably Never Heard Of
Your new beauty obsession? Totally not what you’d expect! Meet the little natural scrubbers that will transform your beauty routine and make you fee like a mermaid.
I recently discovered something pretty amazing, and today I want to share the little secret with you. It’s a beauty secret; one that’s all natural, unique, and straight from the sea.
Mermaid Scrubbers. Have you heard of these things? On my last trip to my favorite little health food store, one of the gals in the beauty section encouraged me to try them out. At first I had no idea what she meant when she said “mermaid scrubber”, but I mean, if the word ‘mermaid’ pops up in the company of natural beauty products, I’m immediately interested.
The scrubbers are actually natural seaweed that’s been dried and packaged up to lend it’s magic to the skin. Gigartina Red Marine Algae is a type of seaweed harvested in the waters of Mendocino County, CA. It’s dark green in color, and almost feels like coral to the touch. When met with water, the algae softens up and releases an all-natural gel that cleanses and nourishes the skin. The scrubbers can be used on multiple parts of the body, and in addition to exfoliating and toning the face, the gel released by the scrubbers is perfect for shaving. Each package of Mermaid Scrubbers comes with 6 dried pieces of the algae, and one of the best parts is how affordable it is… less than $ 10 for a package, and they’re reusable!
So how do you use them? I was curious at first. No doubt, the scrubbers look like — or moreso are — something you would find washed up on a beach to add to your collection of things from the sea, but I actually enjoy that part about them. The back of the package directs you on how to use them, and the first step is to place one of the pieces in warm water. (You only need one piece per use)
The warm water softens up the algae and expands it into a soft looking piece of seaweed — it expands in a matter of seconds. If the piece doesn’t fully expand, the water might not be warm enough, so you can always run it under the faucet until it starts to feel soft. Here’s what one of the pieces looks like before and after:
Crazy how different the shape and form becomes, right? You’ll start to feel the natural gels release onto your fingertips. I dampened my face first with a little bit of warm water to prep the skin, then started using the Mermaid Scrubber in small circular motions to exfoliate. As a little warning, there’s a pretty strong ‘sea’ smell that is released along with the gel, but nothing too startling. The texture of the scrubber is soothing and the cooling gel feels great against the skin. I exfoliated for about a minute, then rinsed off the gel with some more warm water.
You can totally feel the scrubber getting rid of unwanted toxins and dirt upon first use. You can also let the gel dry and use it as a toner rather than washing it off. Immediately after using, my skin felt so soft and looked really well moisturized. My face tends to have a little bit of red tint to it, and I also noticed it to be more neutralized in color after using the scrubber. After I was done, I let the scrubber dry out on a paper towel. To reuse, all you have to do it reactivate it again with warm water!
I give these little Mermaid Scrubbers the FP stamp of approval, and I’m excited to incorporate them more into my beauty routine!
