The warm Australian winter sun has officially set on one of the best weekends of my life. Each year, Australia’s favourite music festival, Splendour in the Grass in Byron Bay, falls on my birthday. And each year, I (for reasons unbeknownst to me now) had previously decided not to go. But the past twelve months of my life have seen the theme of new experiences and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to say yes to getting my first taste of true festival culture.
Before Splendour, I had never before been to a music festival in my life. Before Splendour, I never truly understood why year after year the nation stops to watch on as thousands flock to Australia’s beautiful Byron Bay for the occasion. But this year, with a three day pass in hand, best girlfriend in tow, and bohemian outfits prepared, we set out for a weekend of bright lights and even richer colours.
My mate Bianca is a Splendour veteran and 2014 marked her tenth year attending the festival – so it’s safe to say I was in good hands. We arrived on the first day just before sunset. A pastel ombre sky greeted us at the gates and we emerged into a field buzzing with people from all walks of life. You could almost reach out into the air and grab hold of the dizzying energy which connected us all.
Stars blanketed the sky and the cool night air quickly bit at any uncovered limb. Immediately soaking up the energy from the ground beneath my feat we ducked and weaved our way through the crowds bathed in a kaleidoscope of lights and colour. We arrived to a stage framed by shining lights and a swaying crowd unified in dance, surrendering to the music. Eyes closed, I let go and found freedom through true physical expression as I let the music wash over me and any cares simply fall away….
Here are a few of my favourite moments from the weekend.
Thank you, Splendour.
