♥ History: Monterey Peninsula beaches have a fascinating and colorful history, from pirate pillages in the 1800’s (one beach was called “the beach of Insurgents”) to the fishing, whaling, and canning market in the 1900’s, to aquatic biological research study in the mid-1900’s. It was Monterey where Spanish ships brought Franciscan Friar Junipero Serra to the area to establish among the very first Californian pueblos in June, 1770, and later on, Monterey was the original place of the state capital. Nobel Reward winner, John Steinbeck, used the location and lives of those he knew in Monterey, to write Cannery Row, Tortilla Flat, and Sugary food Thursday. He referred to Monterey Peninsula as “the circle of enchantment.”
