♥ History: Monterey Peninsula beaches have an interesting and colorful history, from pirate pillages in the 1800’s (one beach was called “the beach of Insurgents”) to the fishing, whaling, and canning market in the 1900’s, to aquatic biological research study in the mid-1900’s. It was Monterey where Spanish ships brought Franciscan Friar Junipero Serra to the area to develop one of the very first Californian pueblos in June, 1770, and later, Monterey was the initial location of the state capital. Nobel Reward winner, John Steinbeck, utilized the location and lives of those he understood in Monterey, to compose Cannery Row, Tortilla Flat, and Sweet Thursday. He referred to Monterey Peninsula as “the circle of glamour.”
