Slow Down, Take Time

Slow Down, Take Time

Seasons, months, days, hours — they all seem to pass us by in quicker succession with each passing year.

I was sifting through photos the other day, looking for a file that I could have sworn was taken just a few months ago. When I finally unearthed it, I was shocked to discover that it was taken back in 2012. How could so much time have passed already? The internet and the sheer accessibility of it all just makes everything so readily available, right at our fingertips, but that instant window to the world, well, there’s a downside to it. It’s far too easy to get wrapped up in the intangible, to look at other people’s pictures instead of taking your own.

Today marks the start of the autumnal equinox, but for many of us, fall started a few weeks ago. We went back to class, went back to work; after the long, somewhat lazy days of summer, autumn hits with an unexpected intensity and it’s easy to miss it completely when you’re focused on other responsibilities.

Do yourself a favor and take the time, slow it down. Close your laptop, turn off your phone, and enjoy just existing for once. How many times have you uttered the phrase “I’m addicted to my phone”? Leave it in your pocket enough, and you’ll be addicted to truly experiencing the world around you.

The change of seasons — any season, not just fall — is a miraculous thing. Get outside and watch it happen. Write some words about it, set some intentions, be thankful that you get to exist on a planet that experiences such things. The days, years, months, and hours will pass by, but they don’t have to slip through our fingers quite so fast.

How will you welcome change into your life this season? I’d love to know!
