I up-cycle mugs from various sources, some commercial, some from yard sales. My husband and I think up ideas and assemble the images necessary. They are water slide decals from an HP Laser Jet printer. The unique thing about the ink is it contains iron oxide (commonly known as rust) which when applied in glazes on stains leaves a lovely sepia brown to red color. When fired in the kiln, they become part of the glaze.
This technique is used by many potters in recent times, having become an artistic expression with limitless possibilities. I love to see what others are doing with it too. Feels like being a part of some historic event.
Subject matter can be serious, whimsical, pictorial, or lyrical.
Food, dishwasher and microwave safe. The image will not come off even with a good scrub.
