John Blanchard stood up from the bench, aligned his Military uniform, and studied the crowd of people making their method through Grand Central Station. He tried to find the woman whose heart he knew, but whose face he did not, the woman with the rose.
His interest in her had started thirteen months before in a Florida library. Taking a book off the rack he discovered himself fascinated, not with the words of the book, but with the notes booked the margin. The soft handwriting reflected a thoughtful soul and informative mind. In the front of the book, he found the previous owner’s name, Miss Hollis Maynell. With time and effort he found her address. She lived in New York City. He wrote her a letter presenting himself and welcoming her to correspond. The next day he was shipped overseas for service in World War II. Throughout the next year and one month the two grew to know each other through the mail. Each letter was a seed landeding on a fertile heart. A romance was fledgling.
Blanchard asked for a photograph, but she declined. She felt that if he truly cared, it would not matter exactly what she looked like. When the day finally came for him to return from Europe, they scheduled their first conference – 7:00 PM at the Grand Central Station in New York. & Quot; & Quot; You’ll recognize me, & quot; & quot; she composed, & quot; by the red increased I’ll be using on my lapel. & quot;
& quot; So at 7:00 he was in the station searching for a girl whose heart he liked, but whose face he ‘d never seen. A young woman was coming towards him, her figure long and slim. Her blonde hair relaxeded in curls from her fragile ears; her eyes were blue as flowers. Her lips and chin had a mild firmness, and in her pale green match she was like spring come alive. He began towards her, entirely forgetting to discover that she was not using a rose. As he moved, a small, provocative smile curved her lips. & Quot; & Quot; Going my method, sailor? & Quot; & Quot; she murmured. Virtually uncontrollably he made one step better to her, and afterwards he saw Hollis Maynell. She was standing virtually directly behind the woman. A female well past 40, she had graying hair tucked under a used hat. She was more than plump, her thick-ankled feet thrust into low-heeled shoes.
The woman in the green fit was walking quickly away. He felt as though he were being split in two, so keen was he want to follow the girl, yet so deep was his longing for the female whose spirit had really companioned and supported his own. And there she stood. Her pale, plump face was mild and sensible, her gray eyes had a warm and kindly twinkle. He did not think twice. His fingers clutched the little worn blue leather copy of the book that was to determine him to her. This would not be love, however it would be something valuable, something maybe even much better than love, a relationship for which he had been and should ever be grateful. He squared his shoulders and saluted and held out the book to the lady, despite the fact that while he spoke he felt choked by the bitterness of his frustration. & Quot; & Quot; I’m Lieutenant John Blanchard, and you should be Miss Maynell. I am so delighted you could fulfill me; may I take you to supper? & quot;
& quot; The lady’s face widened into a tolerant smile. & Quot; & Quot; I do not understand what this is about, son, & quot; & quot; she answered, & quot; however the girl in the green match who simply passed, she pled me to wear this rose on my coat. And she said if you were to ask me out to supper, I should go and inform you that she is waiting for you in the huge dining establishment throughout the street. She said it was some type of test! & Quot;
& Quot; A gorgeous vintage puffy heart with the most beatuiful rrustic patina revealing littles green veridigris that only time itself can do rests dead center on an antique pillar symbol. On either side of the heart are classic pen nibs. The pillar emblem is brought by a 22 & quot; & quot; rustic brass chain randomly dotted by two red glass hearts- like real love, which can be so random.
