Travel Tuesday: Tulum & Sayulita
Follow the ocean currents to new waters, new land, new sights for your eyes and soul to see.
When did you last experience the emotion that hits you upon embarking on a new journey?
The tingle, the excitement, the joy that makes you smile so hard you lose yourself that you can barely collect yourself.
Give into it, that moment, that feeling. Yes, that feeling. Don’t hold back, just let it out…let your emotions flow with the sea’s spirit and embrace this undiscovered adventure one breath at a time.
Enjoy one week of FP Escapes Yelapa, then indulge in the many other gems Mexico has to offer. Along the Rivera Nayarit to Rivera Maya there are small beach towns that embody the perfect bohemian getaway by the sea.
Sayulita, Nayarit
This past April, the Free People West Coast team took a beautiful voyage through the River Nayarit to shoot the “Wild & Free” lookbook – a short flight from Los Angeles into Puerto Vallarta, followed by a 40-minute drive north through the lush green jungle until we reached the surfers’ paradise of Sayulita. What was once a laid-back fishing town was transformed in the 70’s by a wave of surfers looking to catch that perfect ride. Small roads diverge into one central area lined with colorful shops and cobblestone streets. Europeans, Canadians, Americans and local Huichol and Cora tribes intertwine to create a unique living environment with an authentic Mexican charm. Sayulita is a place where the dreamers are drawn to sail and stay anchored by the pull of their passions to find home amidst this growing community of wanderlusters.

Tulum, Quintana Roo
Tulum. A beach paradise of crystal blue Caribbean waters, white sands and soothing sun.
Venturing through the town, one can almost feel the footsteps of the Mayan civilization that once inhabited this land.
The City of Dawn is home to the Sian Ka’an, defined as “A Gift From Heaven” by the Mayans over 2,000 years ago, home to clear spring water that is said to possess magical healing powers. Beyond the city walls lies a maze of cenotes (naturally-occurring swimholes) filled with mineral-rich waters fed by an underground river spanning over 95 miles long. Nighttime dips in the sand and sea are perfectly punctuated by the soft moonlight, with eyes surely gazing towards the stars.
