Turning Your Shower Space Into A Sanctuary

Turning Your Shower Space Into A Sanctuary

I love looking at showering as a time to indulge in a mini spa treatment. Of course its main purpose is to cleanse the body, but I really feel that it can have a calming, relaxing effect on the mind, as well.

And if your shower is your spa, then why not make it feel like one? The key to creating a beautiful shower space, in my opinion, is to address more than just one of the senses. It’s not just about the way your space looks – although that’s a huge part of it. It’s also about the scents wafting through the air, the sounds flowing through your ears, and the feeling of all that hits your skin. Here are some of my favorite ways to turn a shower space into a sanctuary.

Do away with labels.

First and foremost, remove anything that doesn’t make you feel at ease. For me, that’s always been brightly-colored beauty product containers with text written all over them. Luckily, these days there are so many brands who’ve come out with beautiful packaging that looks natural and has minimal text, but when it comes to those bottles that aren’t so lovely, remove them from your shower. Instead, pour those products into a variety of beautiful bottles and jars. I like using glass ones with pumps — the key is to use anything that makes you feel like you’re giving yourself a special treat when your reach for that product.

Fill your space with plants.

There is always something so magical about an outdoor shower, and you can bring that magic right into your indoor shower by displaying a few plants in there, as long as you have the space available, and a little natural light to keep them alive. A great option is a philodendron, which can survive in just a small container of water – no soil needed!

Add healing crystals.

Every space brings with it an opportunity to incorporate some healing crystals. Find some crystals you love, charge them by the light of the sun or the moon, and simply place them on the edge of the tub or on a shelf amidst your beauty products. Not only will they be gorgeous to look at, they’ll help create a beautiful, positive-energy-filled atmosphere.

Play calming music.

Nothing soothes the soul quite like layers of sound coming together in perfect harmony. Find a speaker that can withstand humidity, and treat your ears to your favorite tunes every single day. The best part about this is that you get to control what you hear, so you can base your shower playlist on how you’re feeling currently – or on how you want to feel.

Introduce aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy is a tool that’s been used to heal the mind since ancient times, and your shower space makes for the perfect place to use it. Hang freshly cut plants like eucalyptus, lavender, and lemongrass from your showerhead with twine, or fill a diffuser with an essential oil mixture and place on the ledge of your tub. The steam from the shower will pick up the scents and carry them throughout the bathroom as they lift your spirits, calm your mind, and invigorate you.

Make your own scrubs.

Let us not forget our sense of touch in this endeavor. What we put on our skin has a huge impact on the overall shower experience. I suggest you try making your own body scrub – like this simple sugar scrub or this coconut coffee scrub. It’s fun to play around with ingredients and find a recipe that suits you, and once the scrub hits your skin, you’ll be wondering why you haven’t been making your own scrubs your whole life!

End with a gorgeous towel.

Every shower ends with a towel, so you better make sure yours ends with the most beautiful towel in your possession. I’m actually a little in love with the Sierra Bandito Poncho on our site right now. It’d be the most perfect thing to wrap yourself in as the shower ritual comes to an end.
