How To Keep Spirits High While Traveling

Those that know me well understand that it can be hard to keep me in any one place for an extended period of time. I’m a gypsy at heart and find myself living out of a suitcase at least once a year. Being the type of person who craves change, I’m partial to hitting the road without much planning or explanation.
Being away from my sanctuary at home comes with its fair share of challenges. Staying in so many different places, from countless friends’ couches in Sydney to hotels in Bali, makes maintaining spiritual ritual (or any type of ritual at all) a challenge…
However, I want to share with you a few tips that I abide by when traveling to keep my mystic spirits high.
Decorate your space – whatever that may be
While at the moment the only space I can call my own is my suitcase, this still lends the opportunity to decorate. You could try hang a small dream catcher from the top of your suitcase while it’s open, or even above the bed or couch you might be crashing on.
Burn your favourite incense
The connection between scent and memory is well documented. The olfactory nerve (in the nose) is located very closely to the area of the brain that is connected to the experience of emotion – which is also not too far from the nerve associated with memory.
What this means is when you burn incense that reminds you of home, your brain will automatically take you back there, bringing about feelings of calm and comfort. I like to carry small incense cones which are perfect for traveling.
Carry a spiritual token with you
I always carry a stone that was given to me from my spiritual mentor on one of the rare occasions our paths crossed. When I hold it in the palm of my hand I am reminded that I am being looked after by an energy that is greater than you or I.
If crystals are your thing, be sure to pack the one that makes you feel most at home. Wrap it in a natural fiber like cotton, silk, or pure wool and keep track of the moon cycle so you can leave it out at the full moon to cleanse and charge its energies.
Cleanse energies you pick up along the way
Being a humble guest is important while traveling, as is maintaining your spiritual energies. While it may offend your hosts to ceremoniously cleanse their home, you can smudge yourself to lift any negative energy that has gathered as you go about your travels.
With a set intention before beginning, light the stick and fan the swirls of smoke around your body from head to toe holding your intention clearly in your mind. Imagine the smoke lifting away all the negative thoughts, emotions and energies that have attached themselves to you.
Happy travels!
